Aspiring Athletes Learn the Science behind Sports
How fast is your fastball? Do different floor surfaces affect your
performance? How do you make a perfect bounce pass? Children will find
the answer to these questions as they test their skills in sports such
as basketball, football, baseball, tennis, soccer, and even extreme
sports like snowboarding. They will learn principles of geometry,
physics, force, and friction through activities that revolve around
their favorite sports. Children will be amazed by the science that is
involved in playing sports.
Ricochet Racket – Children shoot tennis balls at a giant racquet, adjusting the angle of the racket face in an effort to hit a target.Balancing Acts – A balance beam, a pommel horse, and tabletop balancing experiments offer children the opportunity to explore balance.
Bounce Pass – Children are challenged to determine the correct amount of force at the proper angle to create just the right bounce to pass a basketball past a barrier to a "teammate."
Get in the Game
– This virtual reality system allows children to watch themselves on a
TV monitor as they play volleyball, play soccer, or ski downhill. How Fast Is Your Pitch? – Children can measure the speed of their throw in this radar-equipped pitching booth.
Locker Room – Children can try on sports gear and see equipment for various sports on display.
Set Shot – This exhibit teaches children about trajectories by asking them to shoot a marble-size basketball through a tiny hoop. This can only be done if the trajectory of the ball is just right.
