From the Experts
Playing with a Purpose“Play” by Stuart Brown, M.D., the founder of the National Institute for Play, outlines the many reasons that play is important to our lives. “What enables us to innovate, problem-solve, and be happy, smart, resilient human beings? Our ability to play…Childhood is where it all begins, the time of life when play comes naturally. It is the foundation of what we do for the rest of our lives.” For more information, read “Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul” by Stuart Brown, M.D. with Christopher Vaughan.
Mister Rogers’ Take on Play
Fred Rogers is the much-loved creator and star of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood which brings children the Neighborhood of Make-Believe and hours of TV learning. His encouragement of imaginative play has touched the lives of many children for well over 30 years. He said that “play is a way for children to learn who they are, how the world works, solve problems, and to express feelings. Yes, play is the real work of childhood, and for young people today, many children’s museums offer play experiences that other settings are not able to give them.” (Source: Association of Children’s Museums)
